Pearl

Pearls are unique organic gemstones formed within living shelled mollusks, such as oysters and mussels. They are created as a natural defense mechanism against an irritant, like a parasite, entering the shell. The mollusk secretes layers of a substance called nacre (mother-of-pearl) around the irritant, gradually forming the lustrous gem.
